Personalized plates

So I am running an errand with my daughter and we see this vehicle ahead of us the plate is RUHAPY2. Not the actual plate but a close approximation. So in my idiocy a million other things on my mind. I read it for some reason as a last name thinking huh, must be an indian guy or something. I am being honest here in my mind it was Ruhaptu. I didn't say anything but as I was finishing and dismissing this thought my daughter said "are you happy to? Why that plate?" My eyes went wide realizing my mistake. I was laughing to myself and tried to come clean. I said so to my daughter. Oh man I thought it was a last name like Ruhaptu, like an indian name or something. I am sure it'll be no surprise I am always goofing around with my kids. luckily for me I am pretty sure she thought I wasn't serious. Doing her best to hide her laughter "Daahhhhhhd..." heavy eye roll... "it's, Are you happy too?"

Of coarse I recognized she was correct. But I legit thought it must be an Indian family and the more I tried to tell her so the more she tried to maintain her school enforced PC sensibilities and not laugh. Watching her struggle so hard to not laugh and scold me made the whole thing all the funnier. So I did the whole, what are you gonna do when we pull up next to them and inside is a nice indian family?

It wasn't. Damnit, predictably it was a white chick.

Little interactions like this are one of my favorite things about being her dad. These conversations had while driving together either on trips or running mundane errands. They are the things I find myself smiling about most when I think back about random car rides with my own father. I can only hope that one day it'll be the same for her and interactions like these will be the stories she tells her own kids.
